THE ART OF MAKING A HOUSE FEEL LIKE HOME
The Art of Making a House Feel Like Home
There is a difference between a house that looks beautiful and a house that actually feels beautiful to live in.
We have all walked into homes that are perfectly finished. Everything is immaculate, the furniture is beautifully chosen, the colours work, the lighting is considered. And yet, sometimes, something is missing.
It does not quite feel like home.
For us, great interior design has always been about more than making a room look good. It is about creating a feeling. A home should reflect the people who live there, the way they spend their time and, particularly in Cape Town, the landscape that surrounds them.
Less perfect, more personal
One of the things we are noticing more and more in interiors is a move away from spaces that feel overly perfect.
There is a growing appreciation for homes with character. Handmade pieces, natural materials, old and new furniture sitting comfortably together, books, artwork collected over time and objects that actually mean something to the people who live there.
It is these little imperfections that often make a room feel interesting.
A home does not need to look as though everything was bought on the same day from the same showroom. In fact, we think the opposite can be far more beautiful.
The most memorable interiors tend to have a story behind them.
Texture matters
Texture has become such an important part of creating a comfortable home.
Think natural timber, linen, stone, woven fibres, aged metals, handmade ceramics and fabrics that you actually want to touch. These materials bring warmth and depth into a room without having to rely on lots of decoration.
This is particularly relevant in Cape Town, where there is such a strong connection between architecture, landscape and natural materials.
A room with a neutral colour palette does not have to feel bland. Layering different textures can create an incredible amount of interest while still keeping the overall feeling calm.
Bringing the outside in
Perhaps one of the greatest advantages of designing a home in Cape Town is the landscape.
The mountains, the sea, the light and the gardens are all part of the design.
Indoor and outdoor living have always been important in South African homes, but we think the most successful spaces go beyond simply putting a set of doors between the living room and the garden.
The two spaces should feel connected.
A natural stone floor might continue onto a terrace. The colours inside might pick up the greens and earthy tones outside. Outdoor furniture can be chosen with the same care as the furniture inside. Lighting can help the garden become part of the room once the sun goes down.
The garden becomes another room of the house.
And in Cape Town, why would you not make the most of it?
Designing for real life
Beautiful interiors still need to work.
A sofa needs to be comfortable. A kitchen needs to be practical. There needs to be somewhere to put the things that would otherwise end up on the kitchen counter. A dining table should work for a dinner party just as well as it does for Tuesday night supper.
This sounds obvious, but it is something that can easily get lost when designing a home.
We always think about how a space will actually be used.
Where will you sit with your morning coffee? Where will the children drop their bags? Where will you have friends over for dinner? Where will you sit quietly at the end of the day?
These are the things that ultimately shape a successful interior.
Choosing warmth over trends
There is certainly a move towards warmer, softer interiors at the moment, with natural timber, earthy colours and tactile materials becoming increasingly popular in South African homes.
But perhaps the bigger shift is that people are becoming less interested in following a particular look.
Instead, they want their homes to feel personal.
And that is something we love.
We do not think every home needs to look like an interior design magazine. Some of the best homes are the ones that feel as though they have evolved naturally over time.
A beautiful antique next to a contemporary sofa. A piece of local artwork above a simple console. A handmade chair that you have had for years. A collection of ceramics picked up while travelling.
These are the details that give a home its soul.
A home should make you feel something
Ultimately, that is what good interior design is about.
Not whether a room is currently on trend.
Not whether every piece of furniture matches.
Not whether your home could be photographed for a magazine.
It is about how you feel when you walk through the front door.
Calm. Comfortable. Inspired. Relaxed. Perhaps even a little bit spoiled.
For us, the best Cape Town interiors are those that take their cues from the people who live in them, the architecture of the house and the incredible landscape outside.
Because when all three come together, you do not just have a beautifully designed house.
You have a home.
